We were having our team retreat and we had just got done playing some
games outside that involved water balloons. So Julian had on only a
t-shirt and shorts as we began our planning session immediately following
the games.
He approached the huge white board that was set on a tri-pod and began
talking and writing some things down...then all of the sudden...WHAM!!!..the
white board slipped off the stand and fell 3 feet at the speed of
gravity multiplied by the incredible weight and with all that force landed
on the edge of Julian's big toe! It was amazing that he was
able to keep things under control, but thankfully he did.
The Toe immediately turned gross...and everyone gathered to look
while Julian winced in horrific pain...(A good of amount of pain was also
extended due to the fact that Julian knew he would not be able to play
anymore sports or games for the rest of the retreat!)
The edge of the toes burst open by the force of the fall and stuff from
Julian's toe began to come out. You could also see all the way down
under his toe nail so we knew that would not stay in. The pain was
pretty bad and we weren't sure if it was broken so we took him to the
hospital.
Julian was kind of wimpy and afraid to go to the Mexican hospital and
especially afraid to have his toe nail ripped out. We got their and
waited a long, long time. Then a doctor came in and took Julian to
get X-rays. About an hour later (mostly of lying on a metal slab
alone in the X-ray room) they brought Julian back in and said he had
broken the end of his toe.
They they decided that they were going to have to rip out his toe nail,
give him stitches. They began by giving him 3 shots of nova cane,
1 directly into the joint of his 1st and 2nd toe (gross), they began to
rip/cut the bad stuff and nail away and found a ingrown toe nail.
(this is where Julian began to really hurt). So they said let's give
him another shot, but as they continued on the pain grew immensely (so
he says). Finally they cut off the nail, stitched him up,
bandaged him up and we took him home. He has not wore a real show
since. But someday soon we know the toe will recover and we'll
get our Julian back! (All stories have a happy ending)
